Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled Field Technician to service, maintain, and repair low voltage transit equipment on WMATA buses. This position involves working at 8 WMATA bus garages throughout the Washington DC metropolitan area, focusing on critical fare collection and transit systems including validators, fare boxes, tablets, and switches.
Key Responsibilities
- Equipment Maintenance: Service and maintain low voltage transit equipment including validators, fare boxes, tablets, switches, and related systems on WMATA buses
- Field Service: Perform on-site troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs at bus garages and transit facilities throughout the DC area
- System Installation: Install, configure, and upgrade fare collection hardware and software systems for bus-mounted equipment
- Preventive Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance schedules and system health checks to ensure optimal equipment performance
- Technical Support: Provide technical assistance and basic training to WMATA maintenance staff and bus operators
- Documentation: Maintain detailed service records, repair logs, and maintenance activities for all equipment serviced
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and procedures when working in active bus maintenance facilities
- Response Time: Meet 2-hour response time requirements for Metro Bus Maintenance requests during weekdays
- Service Level Management: Ensure no more than 10 buses remain out of service due to pending warranty support

Primary Locations: 8 WMATA garages including:
- Andrews
- Bladensburg
- Cinder Bed
- Four Mile
- Landover
- Montgomery
- Shepherd Parkway
- Western
Qualifications
Required:
- Associate's degree in Electronics, Electrical Technology, or related technical field
- 2+ years of field service experience with low voltage systems or electronic equipment
- Strong knowledge of electronic circuits, diagnostic tools, and repair techniques
- Familiarity with public transportation systems and fare collection technology preferred but not required
- Valid driver's license with clean driving record
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Schedule flexibility is essential: Must be willing and able to work all shifts (day, evening, night), weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed for emergency repairs and system maintenance
Preferred:
- Experience with transit systems or public transportation equipment is a plus
- Knowledge of point-of-sale systems, card readers, or payment processing equipment
- Understanding of industry regulations and safety standards
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
- Customer service experience
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs of equipment and tools
- Comfortable working in active bus maintenance garage environments (indoor/outdoor conditions)
- Ability to work around moving buses and in maintenance bay areas
- Capable of standing, kneeling, and working in various positions for extended periods
- Manual dexterity for handling small electronic components and tools
Work Details
- Salary Range: $25.00 - $28.00 per hour
- Schedule: Shift schedule to be determined (day, evening, or night shift coverage required)
- Schedule Flexibility Required: Must be available for rotating weekends, holidays, and emergency calls as needed to maintain critical transit systems
- Location: 8 WMATA bus garages throughout the Washington DC metropolitan area
- Travel: Assigned coverage area but may need to assist at other garages during shifts (company vehicle provided)
- Environment: Active bus maintenance garages and operational transit environments
- Benefits: Cell phone allowance $50 mileage reimbursement (standard mileage rate)
Service Expectations
- Address service tickets within 24 business hours
- Support fleetwide hardware upgrade campaigns without impacting day-to-day warranty operations
- Maintain inventory readiness with all necessary components and assemblies for immediate repairs
- Provide seamless coverage and rapid resolution to meet WMATA's operational expectations
Work Schedule will be discussed during screening. Must be open to work days or nights.
